AAASP: Tell us a little about yourself—where did you grow up, go to school, and attend college? How long have you been teaching?
Jacob Roche: I grew up in Sautee, GA, and attended White County High School. I played college football at Union Commonwealth University and later earned a Master’s in Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University. I’ve been in education for five years.
AAASP: When were you first introduced to adapted sports?
Jacob: During my first year at LaGrange High School, I was asked if I would be interested in coaching AdaptED Sports, and I agreed.
AAASP: Why did you get involved with AAASP?
Jacob: I wanted the opportunity to coach athletes who might not normally get the chance to participate in sports. Watching them grow both as athletes and as individuals has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
AAASP: Which AdaptED Sports do you coach?
Jacob: I’m the head coach for handball, basketball, and football.
AAASP: Tell us about yourself off the court—we’d love to hear more about your family, hobbies, and interests!
Jacob: I have a wonderful family, including my mom, Teresa, and my sister, Jenna, who has two children, Autumn and Gage. Outside of AdaptED Sports, I also coach football and track, where I serve as head coach in track. Some of my favorite hobbies include traveling and weightlifting. I especially enjoy skiing in Colorado and reconnecting with my college friends whenever I get the chance.
AAASP: What did you learn through playing sports? Any key lessons you share with athletes?
Jacob: Sports taught me that no matter what challenges you’re facing, you can work through them and achieve success if you put in the effort and stay determined.
AAASP: Any advice you’d like to share with AAASP athletes?
Jacob: Come to practice every day and focus on doing the little things right—because how we do the little things is how we do everything.
AAASP: What are your goals for the future?
Jacob: I plan to continue coaching and would love the opportunity to become the head coach of all the sports I’m involved in. Eventually, I’d also like to pursue a role as an athletic director.
AAASP: Anything else you’d like to share?
Jacob: Coaching and working with athletes through AAASP has been an incredible experience. I’m excited about the growth of the organization and the new teams joining across the state.
