Atlanta, February 27, 2017 – The American Association of Adapted Sports Programs, Inc. (AAASP 20th Annual
Interscholastic Wheelchair Basketball State Championships in Georgia begins March 4, and concludes March 9, 2017 with the wheelchair basketball finals in Athens, GA (new this year!) The Championship will be held in conjunction with the Georgia High School Association’s State Championships at Stegeman Coliseum, on the UGA Campus in Athens, Georgia. The following teams from both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels across the state will compete this weekend in the state playoffs to vie for the title of state champion: (Varsity) the Gwinnett HEAT, the Houston County Sharks, and the West Georgia Wolverines; and (Junior Varsity) the Atlanta Wolfpack, the DeKalb Silver Streaks, the Henry County Hurricanes, the Houston County Jr. Sharks, and the Muscogee Lions. Top four teams will advance to the State Championship.
AAASP and GHSA have a rich history in the area of athletic programs for students with disabilities and have been
honored nationally for their partnership. GHSA formed the nation’s first dual governing alliance with the American
Association of Adapted Sports Programs, Inc. (AAASP), in 2001, to pioneer efforts in school athletic programs for
students with physical disabilities. Through this alliance, GHSA recognizes AAASP as the governing and sanctioning body for adapted sports programs for Georgia’s schools. Adapted Sports is celebrating its’ 20th Anniversary this year.
